Great end to season as President’s Team WinS
It was a perfect end to the season yesterday as the President's team got the better of the Chairman's team on a warm, sunny afternoon at Melton Park. Asked to bat an a greenish wicket, President Nick Evans-Lombe saw his side total an impressive 195-5 in their 30 overs. The President chipped in with 10 runs and Martyn Cook (32), Joe Greenslade (31) and Tim Hales (30) all retired having reached 30 but the bowlers kept things fairly tight for the first 20 overs. It was the appearance of Kai Wilkinson-Loines, in at number 9, that changed the momentum of the match. His quick-fire 31, including 4 fours and a 6 off very few balls, took his side well beyond what, for a long time, had looked a score of about 140. With Chris Wright (20 not out) and Corey Rushton (10 not out) taking advantage of some friendly bowling towards the end of the innings, a total of 195 looked challenging to say the least. Young Sammy Belderson was the pick of the bowlers with 1-8 off his 3 overs, with Dale Weston (1-12), Adeel Irfan (1-21), Matt Rushton (1-15) and Eusha Fawad (1-24) taking a wicket apiece.
In reply, Simon Woods (22) and Dom Evans (34) got the Chairman's team off to a good start and, with Rich Waddell (17), Matt Rushton (20) and Sam Mann (30 retired) all making good contributions, it looked like being a tight finish but Duncan Greenslade's 4-11 blew away the lower order leaving the returning Dom Evans too little time to score too many runs. In the end the Chairman's Team fell short by 21 runs with Chris Wright conceding just 4 runs in his 3 overs and Corey Rushton and Kyle Weston taking 2 wickets apiece. On a day of many dropped catches, Martyn Cook took a very good one as a great time was had by all.
Many thanks Celia and Sallyann for the tea and cakes and to everybody who pitched in to help with the bar, barbecue and the clearing up. It was an enjoyable finale to a good season. The next celebration is the Awards Night at Roundwood on Friday 7th October. Don't forget to ‘book' with Celia asap.
